Greater Springfield's much acclaimed Polaris Data Centre has been named as one of five Australian data centres to house Federal Government data during the development of a whole-of-government data centre strategy.

Designed as a primary and secondary IT disaster recovery facility, Polaris opened in February 2009 and is the outcome of a strong joint venture between Springfield Land Corporation and Suncorp. Polaris is already 90% leased.

Greater Springfield based Strategic Directions were the design authority of Polaris and bought data centre expertise to the project.

Springfield Land Corporation's (Greater Springfield's masterplanners) Executive Director of Commercial Development, Chris Schroor, said the government's decision to trust Polaris Data Centre as a home for some of the nation's most important information was testament to the facility's quality and security.

"Technology is a key pillar in the masterplan of Greater Springfield and we are proud that the time and effort that was put in to make Polaris the most advanced facility of its type in the country has been rewarded with the Federal Government choosing to house important information at the facility," he said.

The Minister for Finance and Deregulation Lindsay Tanner made the announcement last week saying interim arrangements were required to ensure government agencies were able to continue to deliver their services.

"With dark fibre connectivity to Brisbane and Sydney, state-of-the-art security (including biometric fingerprint scanning and man traps) and the ability to function for 48 hours uninterrupted in the event of a power failure, the government can rest assured Polaris will provide them with the ability to continue to function smoothly," Mr Schroor said.

Located in the heart of the Greater Springfield, in South East Queensland's fastest growing region, the Data Centre has been designed as a primary and secondary facility and acts as a disaster recovery site, internet data centre and carrier interconnect exchange.

Polaris Data Centre will be the largest of its kind in Australia and has been purpose built on a greenfield site to host mission-critical ICT systems for Government departments and corporate enterprises.

The five-storey information hub comprises 14,000 square metres of floor space, with 7,000 square metres of raised floor area or net lettable space over three levels.

The project facility has been fitted out to 800 watts per square metre of rack power across the raised floor area and is Queensland's only Tier 3+ co-location facility.
